Forget pawn shops—you’ll get burned. Get a professional antique dealer to appraise it (maybe antique roadshow for starters) then place for sale.

It depends on the brand name. Condition of all parts. If the original box it came in is present. The particular model / type of train and collector interest. Some you cant give away others you could get a new car for it. Check with a model train collector or search on line.. Better safe than sorry.

Check in a Greenberg’s guide. Depending on condition and number made you could be looking at some serious $$$. During the late 90’s there was a lot of speculation buying that made the demand and prices skyrocket, now things have calmed down.

Why not set them up and run them? You can always add to you layout and retire your Lionels to a display.

It really depends on how good of a set it is, and on condition.
The cheapest set from this time period is worth about $50 today, the best set worth several thousand.
Please add the numbers off the sides, and it will help narrow down a price a little bit more.
